Pierre Augeste Renoir, born in Limoges,France, contributed in inventing impressionism. As a young man,Renoir spent many hours in the Louvre studying the works of the old masters-Europe's greatest artists from the 1600s and 1700s.
When Pierre was 13 years old,his parents arranged for him to get a job in a workshop painting decorations on China plates, cups and vases.Renoir made pretty good money in the workshop.
When he was 20, he decided to stop working so that he could study art more seriously.
He joined the studio of Charles Gleyre.
In France during the 1800s, it was important for an artist to have his work accepted by the Salon. The types of paintings that were shown were usually painted with dark and solid colors and had good detailing.Often, they showed a historical event or ancient legend or portraits of important people.
3 of Renoir's friends, Claude Monet,Alfred Sisley and frederic bazille, wanted to try new ways of painting. So they (including Renoir) went to a nearby forest of Fontainebleau to paint picture of nature outdoors.
Even though Renoir loved the look of his new works, he still did paintings in the older styles just to get into the salon show. Some of his works like Lise with sunshade were accepted. But 'cause no one would accept impressionist paintings,Renoir and friends decided to put their own exibition.
Most people didn't like the paintings in their exhibition. They felt that the artists were playing games with them. The paintings had no detailing and were carelessly done.
However few people in Paris appreciated his work.
One wealthy buisnessman asked him to draw potraits of his family.Soon many other asked Renoir to paint potraits for them. Renoir made good money from this.
Renoir often had his friends sit as models in his larger outdoor paintings. The Luncheon of the Boating party was one such drawing.
Pierre Auguste was happy to marry his favourite model Aline Charigot. They had three sons.
When things were going on great and people started loving impressionists' paintings Renoir decided to change his painting style. He combined the styles of impressionism and techniques of painting he learned from his old master.Renoir kept painting to find the right style of painting that would satisfy him.One such is The Umbrellas. Near the end of his life,he finally seemed happy with his work.
