Our family has some sort of hobby, in Hindi known as " shauk", of collecting craft works of different places ( not necessary to be countries). Thus, I thought to make this page as a " Craft Diary " where I'll write about few craft works collected by of our family.
Will be back next week:-)
The Faces - masks of Sri Lanka and India
1st November, 2015
Masks of Sri Lanka and India are extraordinarily beautiful. They have that (im)perfect look. Mostly handmade, these masks generally drive tourists crazy. The masks are worn in dances, and are also sold to the tourist trade and institutions for display.
Sri Lankan masks are mostly made(manufactured) at Ambalangoda. The traditional masks are carved from light Balsa like Kaduru wood (Nux vomica). Kaduru trees grow in the marshy lands bordering paddy fields. We bought two masks from a Sri Lankan exhibition.
India, especially central and south India, are well known for traditional masks. Used for displays, dance and drama these huge, magnificent masks are worth extolling.
Few months ago we visited the craft museum of India(Delhi) and saw a beautiful dance. The best part of the story was that the man was wearing a huge mask. Have a look at it:
A masterpiece out of many - a craft work of Istanbul
25th October, 2015
Few months ago my mom went to Istanbul. Although she was impressed by the beauty of the city, the food, the markets; she was a lot impressed by the craft. Rich in detail, these craft works give you an astounding look! My teacher said that it looks as if it's a part of the dome of a mosque ( which are very detailed and beautiful).
The picture above is a shop filled with "MASTERPIECES!"
And this is a picture of a masterpiece we bought.
So that was all for now...I'll be soon back with new craft works.
